Wilfred’s Farm | 3-Star Reactive Friendly | Eco-Friendly Honing Farmhouse

Wilfred’s Farm, Heath Cottage, Honing, NR28 9PH
(28 customer reviews)

Wilfred’s Farm is a 300-year-old slice of Norfolk history, once home to a legendary local farmer who worked this land with shire horses. Today, it is a bright, sun-drenched sanctuary that perfectly blends its 18th-century character—think original “A” beams and Tudor brickwork—with a modern, eco-conscious heart. Powered by its own biomass boiler and solar panels, the house stays toasty warm almost entirely off-grid. If you’re looking for a peaceful, “no-judgement” escape where you can watch barn owls from the window and explore 300 acres of history, Wilfred’s is waiting for you.

Why Pack Members Love Wilfred’s Farm:

  • The “Good Life” Spirit: Stay in a home that’s nearly grid-independent! The biomass heating and solar panels mean a guilt-free, carbon-neutral holiday in a house that’s always warm.

  • Wildlife Watcher’s Paradise: Set in a “dead-end” lane with two SSSIs nearby, you can spot barn owls, herons, and geese right from your doorstep.

  • Heritage & Nooks: Sash windows, huge feature fireplaces, and a Chinese wardrobe with its own movie-set history—it’s a house with a story.

  • Safe & Snug Garden: A large, grassed front garden with 4.5ft mesh fencing all around, sheltered by five ancient Bramley apple trees.

  • 3-Star Reactive Friendly: Located on a quiet, no-through lane with only one neighbour beyond. It’s exceptionally peaceful for dogs who need “the quiet life.”

  • Adventure Awaits: Five minutes from South Fen—a vast open area perfect for dawn or dusk walks with the River Ant as your backdrop.

Cottage Details

When You Arrive Pull into your private driveway (space for 2 cars, though there is further space at the rear of The Milk Parlour if you need it) and head to the front door. As you step into the entrance hall, you’re greeted by a beautiful dresser and stacks of books. There’s plenty of room here for outdoor shoes and a cupboard to tuck away your gear.

The Kitchen & Utility Ahead is the charming galley kitchen with lovely wooden worktops. It’s a baker's delight—look in the cupboard under the stairs for all the muffins and cake-making kit! To the right is the Utility Room with a four-drawer freezer (perfect for raw feeders) and a washing machine. This leads to a very secure, small rear courtyard and a handy downstairs shower room.

The Dining & Living Rooms The dining room is a haven of peace, with a large sash window overlooking the garden and a cosy couch tucked into the original feature fireplace. The lounge is equally "hygge," with seating for seven, a woodburner, and a Smart TV. Because of the biomass heating, the whole house has a consistent, cozy warmth that makes it a perfect winter retreat.

Upstairs Bedrooms & Bathroom Head up the Norfolk Winder staircase—these are original wooden stairs that wind a little (mind your feet in socks!).

  • The Bathroom: Located on the first level, featuring a stunning freestanding bath and a Scandi-style chair for sunny afternoon reading.

  • Bedroom 1 (Single): A charming room with a wooden bed and a Chinese wardrobe with a fascinating history.

Take three more steps up to the next level:

  • Bedroom 2 (Double): A light-filled room with garden views and a decorative fireplace.

  • Bedroom 3 (Single): A sweet single room, also overlooking the garden.

  • Bedroom 4 (Master King): A spacious room with a King-sized bed and antique dresser.

The Garden The garden is all at the front to capture the sun all day long. It is beautifully maintained and fully enclosed with 4.5ft mesh fencing. Five ancient Bramley apple trees shelter the side of the house—Wilfred used to harvest these while his horses grazed nearby.

🐾 Adventure at the Gate: Weavers Way

Take a five-minute walk to the end of the lane to find Weavers Way. This wonderful walk is a dog’s paradise. At dawn or dusk, you can often see four barn owls quartering the fen—a sight that truly makes you feel part of the wild Norfolk landscape.

🌊 Wilfred’s Farm Frequently Asked Questions

Is the garden secure for a "jumper"? The garden is enclosed to 4.5ft high with mesh and hedging. While very secure for most, if you have a high-jumping "Alcatraz" dog, do have a chat with Gail first!

What makes the house "Eco-Friendly"? We are very proud that Wilfred’s is nearly grid-independent. We have our own solar panels for electricity and a biomass boiler for heating. It means you can stay warm and cozy while knowing your carbon footprint is minimal.

Tell me about the "Norfolk Winder" stairs... These are traditional, original wooden stairs that wind around a central point. They are full of character but can be a bit steep and narrow. They might not be suitable for guests with limited mobility or very elderly dogs who aren't used to "curly" stairs.

Is there raw food storage? Yes! We have a dedicated four-drawer freezer in the utility room, so there is plenty of space to store your pack's raw food during your stay.

How close is the nearest neighbour? Very quiet! We are on a dead-end lane with only one house further down. You’ll find it’s incredibly peaceful with very little passing traffic.

What we provide & Please Note

Thank you for our second lovely stay at Wilfreds Farm. The dogs were also very pleased to be back Jane and Gail have been very considerate of their needs both times – first stay Nellie was recovering from surgery to fix a broken elbow, and both visits have included our reactive boy Max, who is very relaxed here. We have enjoyed beautiful weather, quiet beach walks as well as inland walks on Weavers Way and trips to Martham Paw Ground secure field and Walcott secure field. Good food at Smallsticks Cafe, Poppyland, Hirst Farm Shop and cannot fault the Star Inn at Lessingham.

Everything we need but most important, the dogs feel very much at home too. Thank you for sharing Wilfreds with us. PS must not forget to mention the annual trip to Horsey for the seal watching, just magical no matter how many times we go!

Absolutely love Wilfred’s Farm. Perfect in every way. The cottage is so dog and human friendly with a lovely big garden, great for our three Border Collies. The location is great, right on the Weavers Way for country walks and minutes away from lovely beaches. Fantastic get away from fireworks too, they can be heard in the distance in the garden but nothing inside so very happy and contented Border Collies and humans not seeing them stressed. Jane and John the owners are lovely and helpful with any needs and local information. Already booked for 2024 and 2025! Getaway heaven 🐾❤️

What an absolute gem of a place, this is such a find. Wonderfully located for both beach and inland walks. Weavers Way is just a short walk away. It was fantastically quiet and peaceful. The cottage is well equipped and furnished to a good standard and so dog friendly. We had a marvellous week at Wilfred’s Farm, the time flew by. We went home feeling relaxed and recharged. The garden was completely secure so we had no worries about escaping pooches, so important. Best of all Gail is a dream to deal with and unlike other holiday cottages I’ve booked recently this surpassed my expectations and more. If you want peace and tranquility go to Wilfred’s Farm you won’t regret it. We’ve booked again! Thanks Gail.

  25. The Green and Harrison party and Moose, Fish, Coco and Minnie

Wilfreds Farm was absolutely lovely! We’ve had a lovely relaxing time. The cottage is so quaint but very spacious and had everything that we needed for a family of 5 adults, 1 child and 4 bouncy dogs.
Weve had a great time seeing the local area.
Happisburgh beach was a favourite for the dogs to run around and paddle
Scarlett (8 years old) loved Hemsby and Sea Palling

    Loved it all, thank you

  26. Babs, Hannah and Hack , Harvey and Bertie

The peace and quiet here is amazing; loved listening to the owls when in bed. The space in the cottage is really good, the quirky layout and the furnishing were delightful. Love the creaky floorboards upstairs and the slight slope. The cottage is very cosy and the garden fabulous for the dogs. We have been fortunate with the weather this weekend, we were able to sit in the garden for a while
We visited Cart Gap beach with the dogs which is really good and spacious (best thing is there are toilets in the car park) Also East Ruston Vicarage Gardens – I am lucky enough to live only an hour away so will definitely be re-visiting them.
Oh yes, nearly forgot to say the beds are really comfy and we have all slept like logs
    Thank you so much!!

  27. The Horner Henwoods

We’ve had a lovely relaxing stay in a magical cottage.
Everything we needed, super comfortable and an amazing fairytale like garden. Loved seeing how many butterflies we could see every day.
