Heath Cottage is a 3 star Reactive Friendly Pack Holidays cottage. Here are the reasons why, but also more importantly, what aspects of the cottage may not be suitable for your reactive dog. Heath Cottage is situated in a very quiet part of Hickling (a rural Broadlands village). There is a field on one side and whilst there is a neighbour on the other side of this detached cottage, it cannot be seen either from the house or garden and to date (in 4 years) we have had no noises from there. The garden is very secure with 9 foot hedging on one side, supported by mesh to the height of 5 foot, wooden fencing to the front and rear of the back garden, and to the right hand side there is 6 feet high hedging blocking the view of the field. There are some lovely quiet walks nearby including Weavers Way (a 5 min walk from the cottage) and some nice bridle paths out of the village. There is no farmland surrounding Heath Cottage and we have had no reports of bird scarers in 4 years. Whilst passers by may walk past the front garden, this cannot be viewed from the rear garden and we are quite confident there is very little for scared/reactive dogs to react to.There is no shared fencing or adjoining house and there is no well travelled coastal path or path walk passing the property. The garden at this Hickling dog friendly accommodation does not look into another property and is not overlooked.

  1. Jane and Georgia xx

Hi Gail and crew, I havent organised myself this week but we have hit Bacton, Walcott, Happisburgh, Horsey beaches and loved every one. In pursuit of The Christmas Shop, we finally visited Holt. Our trip to the local panto on the first night and a Chinese from Stalham and the little art gallery will remain in our thoughts. We cant wait to return to Norfolk and Pack Holidays cottages – the near future!
The people we have met on our travels have been wonderful., the fellow dog walkers at Happisburgh today and their beach loving dogs, so beautiful to see
I have loved all the cottages we have stayed, and can’t believe our luck at finding such a dog friendly place to bring our par to
Thank you and please keep up the good work xx

  2. The Jollys

We’ve had a lovely two weeks here in Heath Cottage. Of all the places we have stayed in the UK, this is our favourite! The garden is very secure for our rescue dog (Eddy). The location near the pub and Broads is ideal and the cottage itself is so comfortable. Chris, Tania and Gail thank you not just for allowing us to stay in such a lovely place, but also for the welcome pack

  3. Sue

We’ve had a very happy week – the house and garden just perfect for us all
Early walks at Sea Palling with our reactive dog were perfect as deserted
Than you so much for providing the perfect accommodation!

  4. Fiona and Mark

We have had a lovely week at Heath Cottage. Weather has been perfect Our dogs have loved the garden – the dachshunds who are very reactive, have had nothing to bark at!
We have stayed at lots of cottages in Norfolk, but this one has definitely been the most peaceful and relaxing
We have been to Bacton Woods, which is great for the dogs, Sea Palling, Winterton, Cart Gap, Hemsby – All dog friendly
Thank you for the provisions much appreciated
Thank you for a lovely week

  5. Jean and Max and Pixie

What a wonderful cottage! Really quirky, which we love
The conservatory is a dream! Sunshine all day and lovely and warm
Kitchen has everything you could need for a holiday stay
The beds are super comfy, we slept really well
Everywhere was really clean as well
The sun shone for us all 7 days we were here, so we didnt really go anywhere, which helped get much needed rest
Pixie (min dachshund) loved the garden, she is an escapologist, but couldnt find a single way to escape. Thank you for that
The stairs were interesting, Pixie managed to open the bottom door and get herself up – she found she couldnt get down though
Thank you for a lovely week, we will be back!

  6. Becky, Ian, Nala and Lenny

Had a lovely stay. Loved looking out the kitchen window in the mornings, seeing all the wildlife
Our dogs had a fab time in the garden, everything here is well equipped and more. Thank you for the welcome pack
Really enjoyed visiting the beaches around here and took a drive to Salthouse beach, amazing views, great for our reactive dogs. We’ve had the best rest and beautiful sunshine

  7. Andy, Lisa and Monty

Had a lovely New Years break at Heath Cottage.
Having stayed at Neaps earlier this year it was great to return to Hickling. The cottage is fantastic, really quiet and remote, with plenty of wildlife
We ventured to the surrounding beaches at Horsey, Walcott, Cromer, Sheringham, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft – being out of season it was really quiet and our dog could chase his ball without a care.
Thanks for another lovely Pack Holiday, see you again soon

  8. Natali Glanney

What a fantastic cottage! Fully equipped with everything you need and really cosy. Loved the option of an extra room downstairs and the conservatory. Our dog is reactive to everything and a jumper but this was one of the safest gardens! Felt very at ease and she barely barked. The best bit for us was the park up the road. Dogs have to be on a lead (field right next to it for dogs to be off lead) but such a big space that you can see dogs clearly and move to a safe space. We’ve never been able to take our dog to the park so this was amazing for us! Kids had a great time there playing football and the playground area. Lots to do nearby and easy to get to Winterton, Great Yarmouth and other places. Had dinner at the Greyhound which was good. A big thank you to Gail and the owner for accommodating our last minute request for slightly alternative dates – we had a lovely time and hope to come back again.

  9. Trevor

Another Pack Holiday winner – thanks Gail!
Stayed in a few, and just love Norfolk.

Heath Cottage is very dog friendly, with all hard floors downstairs, so easy to keep clean. Throws for furniture are provided too.
The main garden is brilliant, large enough for dogs to have mad moments and zoomies, but also with some ‘secret passages’ behind shrubs to add interest. It is fully secure – had three adult ‘investigators’ and a 4 month old Border Terrier puppy on this trip – none got out 😎. Because of the layout and gates, this is a fantastic property for reactive dogs. They have a big garden with no visibility of or access to traffic, people or dogs being walked 👏🏻👏🏻

Stayed at Hickling before so knew there is a lovely park with a poo bin just ten minutes away for late night/early morning ‘comfort break’ walks 👍🏻

Greyhound pub and Pleasureboat Inn are within walking distance from the cottage, both dog friendly, and serve good food.
If you and your dogs like the sea and surf, Sea Palling is less than 10 minutes away.
You can get a decent cuppa, breakfast and sausage for the dogs too at Sandy Hills snack bar, right by the sea wall.
A family run business, these guys are friendly and a good laugh!

This would be my dream retirement home.
Perhaps the staircase could become a challenge with age, but that would be motivation to stay fit and agile!
The charm of an historic Norfolk cottage, with benefits of the modern standard of living – it is a gem!

  10. Michaela, Rebecca, Morgan, Nero, Nala and Marley

Wishing we had longer here in this lovely cottage. Well equipped and the dogs loved the garden! Nice visit to Blickling Hall and Happisburgh Beach. The weather wasnt very consistent but having a nice place to stay with good wifi, puzzles etc, made up for it!! The squirrel puzzle was a challenge!!! Most secure dog garden we have stayed in to date and only paddocks and a long driveway and a house next door, so no issues with other dogs either side. PS the ‘Nippy Chippy’ at Potter Heigham a 9 min drive was very good
Many thanks for a lovely stay

  11. Alan & Annette

Lovely cottage in a quiet village location. The cottage was well equipped and clean. The dogs loved the enclosed garden, though took offence at any birds or wildlife that dared to venture in on their watch. The dog toys and treat were also very well received.
Hickling was great and we had a rummage around the locals yard sale and visited the pleasure boat inn for drinks and lunch in their garden. A fab holiday for all

  12. The Poulters

Had a lovely, very hot week, cottage was a good refuge in between helping our son and girlfriend move house. Sea Palling, Winterton and East Ruston (Old Vicarage Gardens) lovely to visit
Greyhound Pub is nice and welcoming
Thanks for helping when our original accommodation was cancelled at short notice

  13. Izzy, Ben and Sarah

A truly lovely cottage. We felt so at home here. Garden is beautiful and plenty to do in the surrounding areas.
Lovely atmosphere in the Greyhound and delicious pies!
Plenty of lovely walks and nature
We will be back, thank you!

  14. Dawn and Jon

What an amazing cottage, felt like home, didnt want to leave so we booked an extra two nights. Our dogs had such a fun time in the garden and sitting in the warm conservatory. Cottage had absolutely everything we needed and so much space, We will be back next year. So much to see and do – Wroxham (lovely town), Potter Heigham a must, Sea Palling lovely beach / cafes. Fresh made doughnuts. So many places to see all within a 30 mins drive.
Highly recommend The Greyhound Pub in the village, had an amazing Sunday roast there but do prebook! Thank you!

  15. Peter and Jane and Honey (GSD) and 6 month old Archie Cockerpoo (aka Captain Wigglepants!)

Our last minute short break definitely didnt disappoint. Heath Cottage is beautiful, such a cosy place to come back to after some wet and windy dog walks.
Fantastic beaches and countryside dog walks – we couldnt have enjoyed ourselves any more!
    Thank you

  16. The Kanes

Had a lovely week in the cottage with some lovely walks with the dogs and some of the family enjoyed a boat cruise.
Wonderful garden and great seeing muntjacs in the field beside the cottage. Boys adored the garden!
Loved washing up and listening to the bird song!
Thank you for a fabulous week! The cottage is so beautiful and homely

  17. Emma Baker

Absolutely wonderful! Lovely cottage, lovely secluded garden, beautiful surroundings and properly dog friendly. Would HIGHLY recommend!

  18. Tracey Hart

Heath Cottage is a truly fabulous place! Comfortable, cozy and absolutely everything you need for humans and furbabies. Felt very much at home and relaxed from the minute we arrived! The dogs had a wonderful time in the garden and we didn’t really need to visit loads of places as the Hickling Broads were just a short walk away. We met the lovely locals along the way who gave treats to the dogs and fascinating conversation for myself and the Husband. Bonfire weekend did not affect the dogs even though there were a few let off – could not really hear anything inside the cottage! We didn’t want to come home!!! Hopefully will be back very soon.
3rd to 10th November 2024 Tracey, Gary and our 8 pack 9f little furbs

  19. Emma Snow

Just returned from a few days at beautiful Heath Cottage. Thank you to Gail and the owners for providing the perfect bolt hole. Everything you could possibly need was included and the beds were so comfy. Very grateful for the extra day bed downstairs which my son had bagged before we’d unloaded the car. Rocky the Vizsla loved the enclosed garden.

  20. Chris

Our 2nd time visiting beautiful heath cottage.
We come here to recharge the batteries.
The cottage is very warm and cosey and always very very clean.
Fully equiped for humans and dogs.
Lovely welcome pack for humans and dogs on arrival.
Throws and towels for dogs all provided.
The garden is totally secure and large enough for the dogs to have a good run around.
Fantastic for reactive dogs as not overlooked and it is so quiet.
Gail and the team went over and above for us and was very much appreciated.
Looking forward to coming back again.

  21. Alyson, Gina, Muffin, Kray, Vegas and Bob

Our third time here. Dogs loved it. Walks on the beach and Bacton Woods and afternoons lazing in the garden.
We’ve already booked for next year – looking forward to it!

  22. Vicky, Graham and Matthew and Annie and Eddie

Just what the doctor ordered. Lovely cottage and very well equipped. The dogs loved the garden. They could do proper zoomies and also some rabbit watching.
Sea Palling beach was lovely and quiet when the tides were high
Bacton Woods was also lovely and much needed shade

  23. Les and Juliet and the spaniels

Without a doubt the best cottage in Norfolk for a holiday.
Perfectly secure garden for the dogs. The dogs loved the beach at Waxham and when that was too hot, the shady walks in Bacton Woods. Humans enjoyed all the amazing wildlife, particularly at Hickling Nature Reserve
All in all a perfect Broadland holiday

  24. emma baker

Absolutely perfect! So rare to find a genuinely dog-friendly place to stay with multiple dogs. Hickling broad is a stone’s throw away and is utterly stunning. The cottage is so cosy and the garden is fabulous. We will be booking again!

  25. April

We’ve just returned from a week long stay in Heath cottage.

This was our 2nd stay with you, our first was in Dairy cottage around 6 years ago. We had 3 completely different dogs then. We now have a new gang of 3, and 2 children! The cottage was amazing, one of the best we’ve stayed in. Our Labrador is reactive and it was perfect for him. The location of the cottage is fabulous, the surrounding countryside beautiful. We passed deer regularly, quite a novelty for us as there are none in our corner of Kent.

We visited a beach every single day. We also hired a boat from Sutton Staithe for 4 hours to explore the broads from the water. The highlight was seeing an otter on Barton Broad! And a couple of kingfishers. They gave us a really good deal of only charging us for the cheaper boat but allowing us to use the picnic boat. And only 5 minutes from the cottage!

I walked up to the boats at Hickling and was pleasantly surprised to find the playing park. Dogs have to be on a lead up there so perfect to do a bit of training with the reactive Labrador (Incy).

We also visited Cromer, Wroxham and Norwich for some shopping and had a picnic at Salhouse Broad.

We had a wonderful time and I’m already planning our next trip! We are thinking of looking into a short stay over winter to see the seals on the shore at Horsey. Obviously from a safe distance. We visited Horsey beach twice, wow what a spectacle!

Our 3 year old also had a great time hiding his toy cars everywhere. So if anyone finds any… that’ll be why!

Thank you again, I can’t wait to holiday with you again.

What a fab cottage! Everything amazing and comfy and the added touches of dog tags, bowls, beds and throws is fantastic. The garden and conservatory is so peaceful and the location of the cottage was great for us. We enjoyed boat trips, paddle boarding, Bacton Woods, beach days, swimming and fun in the garden. The board games in the evening are perfect for spending time with the kids!

Our 2nd stay at this lovely cottage . Everything just perfect for dogs, pretty secluded garden , comfy dog beds provided and human beds also extremely comfortable. Short drive to virtually empty beaches and everywhere seems to be very dog friendly. A real gem.

  28. Mandy and Neil with Dermot, Declan and Duffy

Had a wonderful few days break. Cottage is wonderful, lovely afternoons spent sunbathing on the sun loungers and many visits to local Sea Palling beach. Winterton-on-Sea is a must, lovely beach and cafe. Dogs have had a fantastic break.

  29. Lily, Elsa and Bobby

We have had a fantastic time, this is a wonderful place to being the dogs. We appreciated all the thoughts that have gone into making the place canine friendly. As for the humans we have had plenty of time to relax. The fishmonger in Happisburgh is highly recommended!!

  30. Val, Ian and Lucy

We had a lovely time at Heath Cottage our 2 Cavalier king Charles’ loved the secure garden. Everything you need was here and all so lovely and clean.
Lovely goodies on arrival were very much appreciated by all, thank you. Horsey Beach was lovely and we were wowed by so many seals both on shore and bopping up and down in the sea. We had lovely food at the local pub and we were all made very welcome (dogs included). A return visit is a must. So much to do with so little time, so a longer stay for us next time.

  31. Bonnie and Ian

We were delighted with Heath Cottage from the moment we walked through the door! A lovely cottage with everything you could need, a lovely welcome pack and I love the added extras for the dogs (biscuits, bowls, beds etc.). Our dogs loved the secure garden and had an amazing time at both Winter and Sea Palling beaches. The Greyhound Inn were very welcoming, and good too! The most relaxing break we have had in a long time and we would love to come back again for sure!

  32. Dee, Steve, Barney Youla, Aisha and Calla

Heath Cottage has been a wonderful cottage for us to stay in – everything you could need, want or think of is here.
Also everything you could need for the dogs was definitely here too, making us humans the lesser pack members! The welcome pack was fab – thanks! Had some lovely walks from the door to the nature reserves and a short drive to our favourite place – Waxham Beach. The cottage has been such a lovely place to stay – we would have definitely booked the next week if there weren’t people already booked for after us! We were so sad to leave but we will definitely be back!

  33. Sue and Co.

What a wonderful break we have had in this gorgeous cottage.
The cottage had absolutely everything we could have asked for. Each room was nicely furnished, each of them a nice space to be in.

The dogs are usually restless for a day or so when we stay somewhere but they were so chilled out, a proper dog friendly cottage. We enjoyed fish and chips from Stalham and dinner at The Greyhound. We took the dogs for a 5 mile circular walk from the cottage and took a drive to Horsey and Winterton, perfect! Massive thanks for everything.

  34. Amanda and Phil

Just what the doctor ordered!!! A beautiful well equipped home from home cottage.
The attention to detail for dogs is amazing. We especially loved the dog tags idea!

Thank you for the goodies you left for us, these were very much appreciated. We will certainly be back and recommend to our other doggie friends.

  35. Claire, Matt, Julie, Barnie and Chris

Lovely cottage, one of the best that we have stayed in. We will definitely re-book!
Had some lovely meals in dog friendly pubs such as The Greyhound Inn in Hickling, The Nelsons Head in Horsey, The Wayford Bridge Inn in Wayford and The Lighthouse Inn in Happisburgh. They were all lovely.

Places we visited were; Bacton Beach, Sea Palling, Sheringham (stunning Pretty Corner woods is a must), Happisburgh and we hired a boat from Potter Heigham and stopped off at a pub in Acle. Really was a fantastic cottage, thank you!

  36. Kirsty, Mark, and Grace, with Holly, Teddy, Quail and Binky

We have had a lovely time at heath making sandcastles at Great Yarmouth letting the dogs have a run at Sea Palling. we also visited Bewilderwood and had a ride on the Bure Valley Railway. We have visited Norfolk several times but always find new things to do as well as revisiting old favourites. Really pleased Heath is so close to ‘the Greyhound’ and ‘The Pleasure Boat Inn’ which are both dog friendly.

  37. Julian, TJ May and Kai

A lovely, relaxing birthday and New Year break at Heath Cottage away from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. We enjoyed some fabulous walks (particularly at the beach) and loved returning to this cosy cottage to put our feet up and paws up.
Without a doubt, this has been the most dog friendly accommodation we have been lucky enough to stay at. It has been extremely reassuring knowing the dogs can potter around in the garden safely and having doggy provisions provided, removed worrying everything wouldn’t fit in the car.

Thank you for a great start to 2019!!!!

  38. Tim, Judith, Beth and Dan

We loved this cottage. Absolutely beautiful with everything we needed and such nice furnishings.
The walks around here were fabulous, the highlight being the seals.

The locals were very welcoming making our stay the best break we have had.

  42. Cat, Luke + Alaska

This was our first holiday as a family with our pup! Honestly couldn’t have wished for a more idyllic place to relax. Our dog, Alaska has loved playing around in this huge garden and we have loved walking and exploring all the local produce, we’ve bought jams, eggs and a plant! perfect location and very quiet.
    We will definitely be returning!

  44. Jennie & Family

As per every Pack Holidays we have booked they have thought of everything, so much so on our beloved dogs. If you haven’t been to Sea Palling we can recommend a great day out at the beach, the cafe alongside the amusement arcade is delicious and the guy’s running the amusements couldn’t be more friendly. We also visited Eton Park near Norwich, was a massive park with Eco friendly cafe , food was delicious, they had crazy gold, table tennis, tennis etc.

Thank you for a lovely stay in Heath Cottage. We spent many a lovely hot evening in the garden. The loungers were a great touch. Beds very comfortable, great location.

Take aways were lovely. We definitely recommend the “Wayford Bridge inn”, the food was amazing, dog friendly inside and the staff couldn’t do enough for you. Also the King’s Arms in Ludham, also lovely food. x

A long awaited break after November 2020 was cancelled for obvious reasons
Beautiful house, beautiful garden – lovely time spent in Hickling with lots of local beaches, finished off spectacularly with the seals! Thank you so much !

  47. Lydia and Kevin with Ziggy, Bear, Louis, Cruz, Hattie and Rudi

The longest of waits for our holiday but by God it was worth the wait!! A glorious week in lovely surroundings. The dogs love it here, even the oldie who has been out more this week than he has over the last 4 months!! First visit to Winteron this time, and definitely won’t be the last – beautiful beach that everyone looks after, not a speck of litter! We love the cottage, the dogs love the garden……what else would you want! Back in September and have booked for 2022 already!! Thank you

  48. Heike, Diane and Lily, Elsa and Bobby

This was our second stay at the cottage, and like the first time, we absolutely loved it. We did alot of walking, sightseeing, and visits to local beaches. Anyone with anxious or reactive dogs or those without recall might be interested in a new secure dog field in South Walsham k9unleasheddogfield.com – Its fab! Hoping to return soon. We love Heath Cottage – thank you!

  49. Laura, JC and Hugo (he loved the treats!)

We love Pack Holidays and especially Gail!! What a superstar
We have been with Pack Holidays before and this is the best cottage so far. We had a fantastic week, mainly in Cromer, Winterton and Hemsby reminding us of family holidays in the past. Thank you so much, two more to book when we get home.

  51. Allen, Yvonne Thompson, Audrey & Mike Pearson, Mischa & Mac

Lovely cottage, clean and cosy. Great to be able to sit in the conservatory and watch the dogs. We loved the garden, all very safe. We hope you don’t change the downstairs (bedroom) into a sitting area – it is a great benefit to those who cannot climb the tight staircase – opening the cottage to those less able!!. We had a lovely time sailing the borads in our picnic boat from Herbert Woods / Potter Heigham for our 40th wedding anniversary. Lovely thought leaving an amazing chocolate cake and biscuits for both dogs and Humans! 😊

    Many thanks

  52. Lydia, Kevin, Ziggy, Bear, Cruz, Louis, Rudi & Hattie x

Our 2nd visit to Heath Cottage this year and it never disappoints! We needed somewhere to get away and recharge the batteries, which isn’t easy with 5 Australian Shepherds and a Kelpie! Cottage is fab as always and the the dogs just love the garden. Rudi’s record is now 12 hours of playing ball, even the old boy remembered the cottage and really relaxed.

Thank you Gail and the team for making everything perfect.

The best this is ………. we are back in 2 weeks!!!

  53. Sue, Steve, Evie & Timothy x

    Batteries thoroughly recharged!

Dogs instantly at home and very content.

Daily visits to Winterton-onSea. Wore them out. Loads of room for them to run off lead.

Lovely peaceful location… a joy to listen to the birds and horses.

    Thanks for having us.

  54. Rosie, Mike, Tilly, The Woofers 🐾 Beav, GSD,. Reggie Mini Schnauzer, Molly JRT

Lovely holiday cottage. Peaceful, relaxing and had everything we needed.

So Clean and fresh and we had a great stay and lovely sleep.

Dogs had a blast just as much as us. Fist time at this cottage, but we’ve stayed at many of your other cottages.

    Thanks again!

We have fallen in love with Heath Cottage and it’s with heavy heart we’re leaving.

Had the most amazing week, shall miss our ‘pet’ cuckoo in the mornings. We had a chinese water deer visit outside the end of the garden around 4pm and there’s a hedgehog often around the hedges.

Garden 100% dog proof – tried and tested to a high standard by our rescue lurcher, especially when she spotted the deer!

    Thank you Gail and owners

  56. Lydia, Kevin, Bear, Cruz, Louis, Hattie and Rudi

Our third visit to Heath Cottage this year!! Its getting to be a habit 🙂 Just the getaway we needed after the chaos of the last couple of months. Most of our days chilling in the garden, with the extreme temperatures, we had to get up at stupid o’clock to exercise the dogs before it got too hot. Rudi was NOT impressed!!!! Dogs had a great time as ever (the main reason we come here), even Hattie was shattered which is almost unheard of.

Thank you to Gail and team Pack Holidays for your hard work as ever!!

    See you next year!

  57. Maura, Martin and Sadie

A beautiful, clean, cosy cottage – up to the usual high standard that we have come to rely on through Pack Holidays. Thank you Gail! Perfect, quiet location with glorious beaches within easy reach; Large garden for zoomies!!

Cosy bed for a relaxing sleep and the best shower ever!!

  58. Georgina, Dick, Rigby, Bowie & Buddy

Our 5th Pack Holiday (Why would you go anywhere else?)
Beautiful cottage in beautiful surroundings, with everything you could ever need! The dogs and human biscuits were very nice! Norfolk! Our retirement county, if you haven’t been before with dogs we recommend Hemsby and Winterton along the dunes and Happisburgh to Cart Gap!
For the Humans, Poppylands for breakfast. Sara’s tearoom’s (Great Yarmouth), for lunch, The Greyhound Pub for dinner and the Dunes Cafe at Waxham Barns for cake. (all dog friendly).
    We’ll be back.
