Reactive Dog Guide
Haviland Cottage is a 3-Star Reactive Friendly gem because it offers total seclusion behind historic stone walls. The Location: Situated on a very quiet, narrow lane in Bonchurch. There is no through-traffic noise, and the stone walls provide an incredible acoustic and visual buffer from the outside world.Visual Privacy: Most of the garden is set behind 10ft high, thick stone walls. This is a dream for reactive dogs as it eliminates fence-running and visual triggers from passers-by or neighbours. The front garden is totally secure behind these walls. We recommend you checking the perimeter of the rear garden when first arriving to ensure you are comfortable there tooDirect Access: The Dog Snug has its own direct access to the secure rear gardens, allowing you to manage your dogs’ outdoor time without traversing the main house.Quiet Walking: You are minutes from the Secret Path to the coast and the high, open spaces of the Downs, where you can find plenty of Yellow Space for quiet walks.

🌊 Haviland Cottage Frequently Asked Questions
Is the garden really secure for "escape artists"? Yes. The garden is 3/4 of an acre and is almost entirely enclosed by 10ft high stone walls. Alan’s own Schnauzers have tested it extensively! The rear garden is on multiple levels, which provides great mental stimulation for dogs while keeping them safely contained. For total security the front garden is the one with 10 feet stone walls and totally secure. We recommend that you check the rear garden with your dog first.
What is the "Dog Snug"? It is a dedicated "bedroom" for your dogs! It features underfloor heating, a TV, a day bed, and an ensuite shower room. It allows your dogs to have their own calm space to settle while you relax in the lounge.
Can dogs go on the beach nearby? Bonchurch Shore and Ventnor beach are within easy walking distance. While some areas have seasonal restrictions, there are vast stretches of the coastal path and the nearby Downs that are off-lead heaven all year round.
How do we get the dogs to the Island? Both Red Funnel and Wightlink are incredibly dog-friendly. You can keep them in the car or take them up to the dedicated "Pet Friendly" lounges on board. It’s a very easy 1-hour crossing!
Is there a shop or pub nearby? Yes! The lovely Bonchurch Inn and a handy local shop are both within easy walking distance. You can leave the car in your private space and enjoy the village life.
🎩 A Little Bit of "Great Expectations" History
Is it true the cottage has a famous history? It certainly is! Haviland Cottage isn't just a beautiful retreat; it has a fascinating connection to literary history. The cottage was once part of the estate owned by Margaret Catherine Dick, the woman widely believed to be the real-life inspiration for Charles Dickens' Miss Havisham.
Margaret was famously jilted at the altar in 1860 and, much like the character in Great Expectations, she spent the rest of her life as a recluse within the high stone walls of the estate. While our guests are here for a much happier occasion, those same 10ft walls that once provided her with privacy now provide our "Pack Members" (and their reactive dogs) with the ultimate secluded sanctuary! You can read the full story in the Daily Mail here.
