Reactive Dog Guide
Herring House is a 2-Star Reactive Friendly property, offering a quiet base in a residential setting. The Location: Situated in a peaceful area of the village. While there is a shared wall with one neighbour, the cottage feels very private. The Boundary: The courtyard is enclosed with 5ft–6ft solid fencing. It is accessed directly via the main door, so your dogs are contained as soon as they step outside.Transitions: As the parking is just outside the gate, we recommend securing your dogs before exiting the car until you are safely inside the courtyard. The Lane: There is a path to the dunes at the end of the lane. While this is very convenient, you may see other walkers passing by the end of the driveway, though the courtyard itself remains private.
Accessibility guide
Herring House is an upside down cottage with both bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs. The stairs to the large living room upstairs, are straight and not steep and have a handrail. Please let me know if you have any mobility issues
Location & Directions
Cottage Details (The Grand Tour!)
When You Arrive Park up in your designated space right outside the courtyard gate. Walk through into your private courtyard—it's a lovely, secure spot with a BBQ, sun loungers, and seating for four. Step through the front door into a bright hallway and dining area. There is a curtain and screening to the front door for extra privacy, so you and the dogs can feel totally tucked away.
Downstairs Living & Dining The ground floor is full of character, with original Norfolk brick walls and tiled floors (perfect for paws!). There’s a lovely dining area for four and plenty of hooks for your coats and leads. Through a feature brick archway, you’ll find the modern kitchen. It’s fully equipped with a washer/dryer, dishwasher, and a 70/30 fridge-freezer. There is an Amazon Alexa in here so you can listen to your favourite playlist while prepping dinner!
The Bedrooms & Bathrooms Both bedrooms are on the ground floor, keeping the "sleeping quarters" cool and quiet:
Bedroom 1 (Master): A spacious, carpeted room with a King-size bed and a brand new extra-deep mattress. It has its own luxury ensuite shower room and even a private door to the driveway.
Bedroom 2: A cosy double bedroom, also carpeted, with direct access to the driveway.
Family Bathroom: A modern suite with a bath and shower-over, located just off the hallway.
The "Upside-Down" Lounge Head up the straight, easy-tread stairs to the "wow" factor! The entire first floor is a massive, carpeted living room. With floor-to-ceiling windows, feature beams, and a stunning wood-burner, it is the ultimate place to relax. There’s a 50-inch Smart TV with a Bluetooth soundbar and two brand-new, incredibly comfortable sofas (including one that can be hired as a sofa bed for extra guests!).
🐾 Local Walks: Dunes & Hidden Paths
The Dunes & Beach (10 mins away): Head to the end of the lane for a "secret" path straight onto the dunes. Miles of sandy valleys and coastline await.
The Fisherman's Return (Short walk): One of the best dog-friendly pubs in Norfolk. Great food and a very warm welcome for your pack.

🌊 Herring House Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is an "upside-down" house? It simply means we’ve put the bedrooms and bathrooms on the ground floor (keeping them nice and cool for the dogs!) and the living area upstairs. This allows the lounge to have those stunning high ceilings, original beams, and floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the light!
Is the courtyard garden private? Yes, it is a private space for your exclusive use. It is enclosed by 5ft–6ft solid fencing and walls, so your dogs can have a good sniff around without being distracted by visual triggers from the street.
How many dogs can I really bring? We officially welcome 5 dogs for free! However, because the upstairs living room is so spacious, we are often happy to discuss larger packs. Just give Gail a shout and we’ll see what we can do.
Is it easy to get to the beach? Very! It’s a level, 10-minute stroll through the village to the dunes. There is also a "secret" path at the end of the lane that cuts through to the dunes, which is great for avoiding the busier main village car park area.
Is the stairs suitable for dogs? The stairs are straight and carpeted, which provides a good grip for paws. Most dogs handle them perfectly, but as the main living area is upstairs, your dogs will need to be comfortable using them to join you for evening snuggles.
Can I store raw dog food? Yes, the kitchen features a standard-sized fridge with a small freezer compartment, suitable for storing a few days' worth of raw supplies.
📝 Please Note
Flooring: Downstairs is mostly hard flooring (great for sand!), while the stairs, bedrooms, and upstairs lounge are carpeted.
Non-Smoking: Herring House is a strictly non-smoking property.
Security Bond: A refundable security bond of £100 is requested.
Winterton Pro-Tip: Download the Winterton Fish Bar app for 10% off your first pre-order. Our local Loomes store is also an Amazon collection point—perfect for mid-holiday deliveries!

Margaret and Eric –
Anyone who has been to Norfolk knows how dog friendly it is. Staying at Herring House, Winterton-on-Sea was truly ideal base for me and my dog Eric. The cottage was beautifully furnished and had every convenience, thoughtfully providing throws so Eric could share the comfortable settee where he quickly made himself at home (see photo). Daily walks along the beach and dunes made for happy dog and owner, (photo of Eric making friends) before venturing to many of Norfolk’s locations – eg Cromer, boat trip on the Broads, great Yarmouth (video of Eric enjoying the sandy beach) and Norwich. Closer to home, just a 10 minute walk to Fishermans Rest where there were more tables with dogs than without, enjoying some delicious food, and similar walk to Poppy’s tea shop, dog friendly and more delicious food in the shape of home made cakes. Only downside came home 3lb heavier. Definitely a place I would recommend

Herring House has a special place in our hearts always welcoming and clean and fresh. It has everything we need for a lovely relaxing week. Our 3 greyhounds love the walks and beach, meeting lots of other people and dogs who have the same aim in life – relocation. We have booked again for next year, looking forward already

Absolutely great holiday. There is everything there that you would need. Loved the big lounge and big tv!! Great for chilling out after a lovely day out. The village is quiet and has a pub, shop and a fish & chip shop. The walk to the beach is no distance at all. Absolutely fabulous for dogs that love to walk and love the beautiful beach and sea.

First time in Norfolk and we loved it! Just spent a wonderful week at Herring house. Great location and lovely house, we especially loved chilling out in the large upstairs lounge after a day out with the fur babies. Both hoomans and doggies loved the never ending nearby beach and took long walks in the sand dunes. The village fish & chip shop and pub were close by and both served delicious food. We would recommend visiting Holkham beach and also Wells Next The Sea. Everywhere and everyone is so dog friendly and we look forward to visiting again. Thank you

What a wonderful week the 3 of us had at Herring House. As soon as we arrived at the property we were just in love with it. The photos on the website are true to form but even with those great photos the property is even better than we could have imagined.
So clean, so welcoming with the little arrival pack and everything we could need.
We were blessed with warm weather for walks along the dunes, by the Horsey Mill and via footpaths and bridleways.
It honestly was the most relaxing week and it was a sad day on Friday when we had to pack up.
Thanks Gail for making it a wonderful dog-friendly, stress-free location. We for sure will plan another visit.
Denise and Mark –
Anniversary long wekeend. A lovely quiet place to relax and reflect away from the usual busy life
Great location with lots of activities, if you want, just a few miles radius 20 to 30 mins
Lovely little village with well stocked supplies, fish and chips, pub a few minutes walk away.
We were very lucky with the weather too
Both feeling chilled now, but back to the hustle and bustle of Kent now
The Hares –
Two hoomans, 4 then 5 dogs – this was a great place to stay. Loved the super comfy beds, the great upstairs and the ability to segregate different dog groups if necessary!
Yard worked well as did the road exit from the bedrooms
Easy, pleasant walks to the dunes, the beach and the countryside. Beautifully quiet!
Well equipped and quirky space.
Gail, as ever, super helpful.
Wonderful stay we will be back! Thank you!
PS Tried Nawdab Indian (cash only). Prompt (20 mins) delivery and food was good.
PPS Club sandwich at Dunes cafe was a treat and bought some more lovely dog biscuits from Happisburgh – self service shed outside the house
Janet and Steve with Jazz, Pixie and Mabel –
A lovely comfy holiday home in a perfect location for the beach, the dunes and the pub. Lovely to just walk there most nights for dinner. We’ve worked our way through the menu. The dogs have had the best holiday – they went on a train for the first time – Bure valley Railway and ate at the Doggy Diner in Cromer. Well worth a visit with the pooches. They also had fun at the K9 Unleashed field. But their favourite thing and ours was peaceful walks across the dunes early evenings and then back to The Fishermans for dinner. I’m going home feeling very relaxed. Thank you! xx
Wendy Hesketh-Dewar –
We recently stayed at Herring House with our 5 dogs over Easter.
Three of our dogs are rescues from Many Tears Animals Rescue and it was their first ever holiday and experience of the sea.
We wanted somewhere they would be relaxed in but close to the sea.
The holiday let was so lovely and comfortable. The dogs were very relaxed and enjoyed exploring.
We would definitely rebook again as we found it the best accommodation we’ve stayed in at Winterton
Colin and Lorna –
An exceptional cottage superbly furnished and all hooman and doggy needs thought of. We have stayed in three Pack Holidays cottages and each has its own wonderful charm and exquisite location. Very highly recommended

Had a woderful time helped by great weather, Local beach fantastic for walking with Stan. Travelled inland to Reedham and walked along the river to the Mill. Nice pub on the riverside there just people-watching. Cromer and the beach at West Runton are well worth a visit. The cottage is very well equipped and clean. As promised all the throws and dog equipment were more than adequate.
Clive and Deirdre –
A lovely holiday for us two and our four flat coated retrievers. Loved the dunes and the beautiful pristine beach with seals close to the shore and bobbing up as if they wanted a game with the dogs. Best visit was the gardens at East Ruston Old Vicarage and we enjoyed Cromer (fresh crabs) and Thrigby Hall walled garden. Herring House was lovely and had all we needed
Horne Family –
Lovely holiday. There were 4 dogs this year. Max is a black poodle about 1 year old – he was found abandoned in a skip along with his two brothers. We couldn’t resist him, he loved the beach and the sea. The other three, Lucy, Mylo and Tilly couldn’t keep up with him. Thank you from them all ! Doggy paradise

Had a fabulous time at Herring House, weather was kind to us too! The cottage was very clean and well equipped, everything we needed for us and our gorgeous Springador Maisie. Fab beach walks….lovely food at The White Horse, Neatishead. Thanks Gail and Co. We will be back xxx
Mitch, Lynne Emmi and Tam Tam –
What a lovely place, well kitted out with everything we needed, loads of throws and towels for the dogs. Was a bit worried it may be cold as its November, but there was a log burner and we didn’t need it!! The place was super toastie and warm and comfortable. The TV even had Netflix which was a bonus for dark nights. It was a minutes walk to super beaches and sand dunes for the furbabies and a real dog friendly pub for the hoomans. 5 STAR!
Would highly recommend the Royal China Chinese takeaway in Martham just 5 mins drive. You’ll never go hungry with their large and tasty portions. Would definitely stay here again. Highly recommended for a quiet, restful holiday
Thanks
Paul and Nadine –
Herring House was lovely accommodation for the three of us plus dogs. The beach was great and the dogs had lots of exercise. We recommend the local fish and chip shop and the pub. The local shop has most things anyone could need – even during the heatwave. The large lounge was a blessing
Thank You

Absolutely fantastic stay – our third year and it feels like home at Herring House. We have loved the beach at Winterton as usual, walked to Hemsby and taken Hector swimming at Sea Palling a few times. Hector loves Herring House and I think if we left him here he would be most happy!
