Location & Directions

Address: Gatecroft House, Garrigill, Alston, Cumbria, CA9 3EB
Gatecroft House is hidden away in rural Cumbria, set in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just over the borders of County Durham and Northumberland. How to find us (Avoid Sat-Nav!): Mobile phone network signal drops out completely for the last few miles, and sat-nav systems frequently try to guide cars down unsuitable, rough farm tracks. The easiest and safest route is via Alston (England\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s highest market town): * Drive up through Alston main street, passing the historic market cross on your left. Continue straight onto the Barnard Castle road. Follow this for roughly 4 miles until you see the right-hand turning signposted for Garrigill. Enter Garrigill village, pass the village hall on your left, and turn left at the junction. Pass the church on your left; Gatecroft House is the large, white, double-fronted stone property on your left-hand side. 🚗🌲

🛋️ Cottage Details

🚪 Arrival & Parking Arrive and park on the gravel off-road area directly in front of the property, which comfortably accommodates 2 cars. Unloading your dogs, crates, and luggage is simple, safe, and entirely away from any busy traffic. Step through the gate of your front country garden and enter straight into a wonderfully warm, characterful home.

🛋️ The Lounge A grand yet thoroughly cosy sanctuary featuring traditional stone flooring, exposed beams, and a magnificent original stone inglenook fireplace. Sink into the ample, comfortable seating and enjoy a film on the satellite TV with the built-in DVD player, all while basking in the glorious heat of the large log-burning stove (stocked with an ample and generous supply of logs and kindling). 🔥🎬

🍳 The Farmhouse Kitchen & Diner The huge kitchen-diner is an absolute showstopper! It features a large, traditional wood farmhouse table that comfortably seats 6 people for family feasts. The cooking space is fully equipped with a conventional convector oven, halogen hob, fridge, freezer, and ample storage. Best of all, it houses a second log-burning kitchen stove, creating a beautifully warm, social heart of the home where your dogs will love to stretch out on the stone flags. 🥧🌾

🧼 The Laundry Area A separate, highly practical utility area containing a microwave, dishwasher, butler's sink, and an automatic washing machine. This area serves as the perfect "doggy mudroom" for towelling off wet paws and coats after an active day exploring waterfalls before entering the main living spaces.

🛌 Downstairs Bedroom & Family Shower Room

  • Bedroom 3 (Ground Floor): A fantastic, versatile ground floor room equipped with a sturdy twin bunk bed, a wardrobe, a comfortable armchair, a dedicated games cupboard, and a well-stocked library of DVDs. 🎮📚
  • Main Shower Room (Ground Floor): Conveniently positioned on the ground floor, featuring a modern shower, WC, and hand basin.

🏰 The First-Floor Bedrooms & En-Suite Follow the traditional staircase up to the bright first-floor landing, leading to two further spacious double rooms:

  • The Master Bedroom: A large, beautifully proportioned upstairs sanctuary with a double bed, extensive walk-in wardrobe/storage area, and its own private en-suite toilet and WC. 🛌
  • Bedroom 2: A second, beautifully presented double bedroom featuring characterful views out across the village and the rolling Pennine hills.
