3 Star Reactive Dog Friendly

3 Star Reactive Dog Rated

This dog friendly cottage in Happisburgh is a 3 star Reactive Friendly Pack Holidays cottage. Here are the reasons why, but also more importantly, what aspects of the cottage may not be suitable for your reactive dog. Swan Cottage is situated on a quiet road leading into Happisburgh village. There are no nearby neighbours on either side and there is nothing a reactive dog can see due to the height of the walls and fencing. Once in the property and the gate is closed, it is secure. There are some nice quiet walks nearby including a lovely bridle path walk to the side of Swan Cottage and of course, that lovely dog friendly beach at Happisburgh. Whilst there is farmland surrounding Swan Cottage we have had no reports of bird scarers. And whilst passers by may walk along the road to the front of the cottage, this cannot be viewed from the garden and we are quite confident there is very little for scared or reactive dogs to react to. The garden does not look into another property and is not overlooked.

Swan Cottage is a dog friendly cottage in Happisburgh, built in 1701 – a gorgeous cottage full of character and charm. It is an annexe attached to the old Swan Inn (a former village inn full of history, stories and centuries of interesting visitors).

Our lovely owner has renovated Swan Cottage to a very high standard, whilst keeping its fabulous Norfolk charm.

Swan Cottage is situated along a quiet road (Whimpwell Street), leading into Happisburgh village, where you can find a local shop (selling local goodies!), Neros dog biscuits (supplied by Jan), a local dog friendly pub (The Hill House) and of course, Happisburgh beach.

If you are a fan of fresh fish, do pay a visit to The Fair Maiden Fish Shop, a traditional wet fish shop which supplies fresh seasonal fish all year round.

The walk into the village takes just a few minutes and the walk to the beach is around 10-15 minutes maximum. The lovely Smallsticks dog friendly café is a 20-minute walk along the cliff or beach and perfect for a late breakfast or lunch.

Happisburgh is a charming village, and Swan Cottage is ideally placed for exploring our Norfolk coast.

It has hard floors throughout and a very well dog-proofed garden for safe play.

If you would like to find out a little bit about Happisburgh, do visit the local village website here http://happisburgh.org.uk/

If you fancy a bit of town shopping, the seaside towns of Cromer and Sheringham are a short drive away, and more locally, some of the lovely little seaside villages we have nearby are Sea Palling, Horsey and East Ruston (famous for its Vicarage Gardens). Or head up to Mundesley and catch a bit of crazy golf!

There is a lot to do from this marvellous base in Happisburgh, making Swan Cottage the ideal Happisburgh pet friendly cottage to stay at.

Turn into the wrought iron gates to the left-hand side of Swan Cottage and drive up the gravelled driveway. Your car (and dogs) are secure in this parking area as soon as the gates are closed.  There is an open barn you can use if you wish to park your car in there but do check the height of your car before parking in the barn. (If you have a very large vehicle there is alternative parking at the far end of The Old Swan)

Open Plan Living Room / Dining Area / Kitchen

The living area has a gorgeous woodburner (and your first basket of logs is free). Should you wish more logs, please ask Lesley, our lovely owner and you can buy more on site.

There is a wall mounted 43-inch Smart television, a very comfy three-seater sofa and you have a full view of the garden from the ground floor which makes the very best of the view with floor to ceiling windows.

The cottage has hard floors throughout (tiles downstairs and wooden floors upstairs.  There are rugs downstairs)

Kitchen and Dining Area

This gorgeous kitchen is spacious and full of charm.  The kitchen units are all cottage-style and in keeping with the style of the property.  There is a breakfast bar and chairs, plenty of storage, a full sized dishwasher and washing machine, microwave, toaster and electric
cooker and hob.

There is a 70/30 fridge / freezer but there is also a chest freezer in the barn for extra frozen goods (and this can be used for raw feeding too)
Go up the wrought iron feature spiral staircase to the:

Bedroom

I cannot describe how beautiful this room is, with the most stunning views of Happisburgh lighthouse and surrounding countryside.  To wake up to this view is a real treat and the king sized divan bed is placed to make the best of this view for our guests.  (Please note this is not a zip and link so cannot be split into twin beds)

There are blackout curtains for night time and day blinds (if you wish to use them) for being able to see perfectly outwards (but not able to be viewed inside!)

The bed has floating shelves and USB charging points for use.

The features in this room are absolutely incredible with beams, an original owl box window which our lovely owner has restored to its former glory (but don’t worry, no visiting owls!)

Shower Room

The shower room is fitted with a modern white suite and a walk-in power shower with a drop shower fitting.

Outside

The garden is a haven of peace and quiet and is perfect for reactive dogs. It is very, very secure, with an 8 feet wall to one side, 6 foot wall and gate and the trellised fence adjoining the farmers field is over 5 foot.

It is mainly laid to grass and there is a warm water dog shower at the side of the property with a private gate for access after muddy walks!
Hoomans are not forgotten, with a suntrap of a patio to sit and enjoy that evening glass of wine with a table and chairs and sun-loungers for relaxing in the garden.  There is also a garden bench set.

How lucky were we to be the first guests to stay at Swan Cottage. The cottage is perfect and Lesley has thought of everything to make your stay extra special!

We have enjoyed some lovely walks – Happisburgh beach is well worth a visit — even in 30 degree heat! It wasn’t busy and it’s dog friendly too.

We also went to Cart Gap bech and popped into Smallsticks Cafe. The fish and chips were delicious and we recommend the cakes too! We have had such a good week. We have enjoyed the peace and quiet and will definitely be back in the future.

    Thank you Lesley

  2. Beth, Phil and Dylan the Dachshund

Thank you so much for having us Lesley! Swan Cottage is without doubt the most dog friendly place we’ve ever stayed in. You really have thought of everything and the personal touches like the homemade bread and brownies made my birthday weekend even more special. Dylan loved the homehade dog treats and his own enclosed garden to sniff to his hearts content. The beaches at Happisburgh and Horsey Gap were the highlight of our stay.

    Love from

The facilities – what more can we ask? Had everything we needed from essentials and more. The hosts were warm and friendly. We’d love to come back!

  4. Gail Adams

Fabulous cottage, with lots of lovely towels. Lesley has really spared no expense in making the cottage a real home from home. Royal Doulton plates and loved the Vines cutlery, thank you.

Dogs loved everything, thank you for the treats and biscuits.

Wroxham Barns, Blakeney, Sea Palling all worth a visit.

Free parking at Cart Gap after 6pm if you have any daylight left for a dog walk.
Thank you for allowing Willow, Clover, Lotus and Miley to come.

We would love to come back xx

  5. Paul and Sarah, Ozzie, Florence and Moley

What a beautiful and tranquil place Swan Cottage is. It’s so lovely because the owner Lesley has thought about everything that humans and dogs need to make a wonderful and relaxing holiday. The cottage is spotless and finished to a very high standard. We loved waking up to the spectacular view and sunrise from the bedroom. The location is perfect, with the convenience of nearby walks and great beaches – Cart Gap and Horsey Gap being our favourites. A huge thank you to Lesley for making us feel so welcome. It’s been a perfect break and we hope to be back soon. With thanks. PS the homemade bread kiss

  6. Natalie and Henry

We’ve loved our short stay. I’m so glad I acted on impulse and booked at short notice.

It’s a lovely walk along the beach to Cart Gap and Smallsticks Cafe. We also walked to Walcott and had breakfast at Kingfisher Cafe – It might not look much from the outside but they do a very good full english breakfast.

I’m going to miss watching the sunrise from the bed in the morning.

    Thank you Lesley

Swan Cottage has been a little bit of paradise for myself and my 2 dogs for the Christmas period. First time away on my own, this beautiful cottage with an amazing view from the bedroom made that so easy. We were met by Lesley, we were much later than expected due to Christmas traffic jams. The heating was on as were the lights and the log burner was roaring away. What a lovely welcome! Looking around the cottage and garden, the attention to detail is apparent. Clean, tidy and everything you need for a few days or a week or so away, and all of high quality. The welcome pack was amazing and the dogs thoroughly enjoyed their Christmas stocking with homemade treats. Bacton beaches, we saw seals! What a wonderful sight! We will also be stopping at Winterton beach for a walk before our long journey home. We would definitely love to visit again. Swan Cottage is definitely the loveliest place I have stayed. Thank you Lesley for having us.

  8. Iveta, Liam + Lenny

Wow! What an amazing & beautiful cottage. Me & partner took our English Bulldog there this January and it was just perfect! Sooo relaxing – especially waking up to the stunning views from that lovely bedroom. The cottage had everything we needed – we loved every single detail (homemade bread, dog bowls, Lesley’s brownies, soft towels and much more).
Very clean, and comfortable stay, gorgeous views, walking distance to the beach & local cafes. We would definitely recommend & cannot wait to stay again! Thank you for having us Lesley.

PS: The bonus for us: the log burner and warm tap shower outside for the doggos!

  9. Jane, Dean, Rockie, Blue and Nettie

Our first time in Norfolk….what a wonderful place to stay. Lesley has thought of everything. 5* across the board!! We mastered the log burner and we needed it in a cool and windy January / February. Our dogs settled so quickly, garden great and they loved watching the sheep every morning from the bed. Local beach fabulous, a few more dogs at the weekend, but to ourselves in the week. Loved Horsey Gap and Happisburgh owls are definitely worth booking in. We spoiled ourselves at the Swan at Ingham and The Gunton Arms as well as the local pubs for homemade pub food. Thank you for everything

  10. Vicky and Nick and Team Sausage (George and Mildred)

We’ve had just the BEST doggy holiday at Swan Cottage, we dont want to leave so we’ve booked again already. This is the very best doggy holiday – you’ve thought of everything for us all and the woodburner has been such a treat. Our little nervous Team Sausages have been so relaxed the whole time too! Thank you. See you next year

Thankyou for our wonderful stay we have had THE best time. The cottage is perfect.
From initial communication to all of the small details, such as the homemade goodies, dog tags, outdoor warm dog shower and even a list of things to do here. We could list so so many things that are perfect about this cottage. The log burner is a firm favourite for our girls, Twix & Rolo.
Watching the sunrise from the bed with a cup of tea is incredible and best of all, we left the cottage engaged. Thank you for providing such a perfect spot.
Just to add thank you for providing the most secure garden and private garden for our reactive girls! All in all, a very relaxing holiday! We will be back in May 🙂
    With love
